The New Child
September 11, 2022 @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Greece
The New Child is the story of a woman who was born in 1950. The story of Daphne. There is nothing special about Daphne, nothing that makes her stand out from the crowd. Daphne is a woman of our generation. She is one of us. One of those of us who rebelled (albeit in our imagination) against the status quo, our family, the traditional way of life, but who then set up our own homes in a modern design with very old materials. From Mao Zedong to Giorgio Armani, Daphne follows her generation to the boom, prosperity and comfort of the ’90s and 2000s and then collapses with it in the financial crisis of the 2010s. And still she goes on.
The New Child represents her power to overcome what has happened and to move forward. Forward to where life and the most profound primeval forces call. Because through all these losses a new Daphne is born. She had to lose one life, but now she knows exactly how to love.
The performance is a monologue by Daphne (Katia Dandoulaki) that recounts incidents that we have all experienced in one way or another. The conservative father, the mother who can even read her daughter’s thoughts, the loves, the marriages, the losses… Life unfolds on stage, as in real life, sometimes as drama, sometimes as a comedy and sometimes as farce, through the cinematic sets of Giorgos Gavalas, where audiences leave feeling that they have seen a huge cinematic spectacle.
